How Össur Formfit Works: The Technology Behind Better Knee Support
Discover how Össur Formfit supports use compression, breathable fabrics and targeted bracing. Explore options for knee pain, arthritis and active living.
First of all, Supporting the Painful Knee
A knee support might look like a simple piece of fabric. But how it is knitted, where it applies compression and how it fits can make a real difference to the experience of wearing it.
The Össur Formfit range brings together compression sleeves and more structured braces for different needs. Its Formfit Pro supports combine shaped knit technology with features designed for specific joints.
So what are those features actually doing? And how do you choose the right support for the activities you enjoy?
Support starts with the fabric
Formfit Pro uses MotionTech™, a three-dimensional knit designed to fit closely around the body and deliver medical-grade compression.
Its construction combines natural materials with engineered yarns to create a lightweight, almost seamless support. Different areas of the knit provide support and flexibility where they are needed.
That matters when your support needs to move with you, whether you are walking the dog, spending the day on your feet or getting back into the gym.
Comfort is part of the design
A support needs to feel comfortable enough to wear during the activities you bought it for.
Formfit Pro’s fabric is designed to move moisture away from the skin. Össur reports independent testing by the Hohenstein Institute showing advantages in moisture handling and breathability against the market-leading comparator used in that testing. These are findings about fabric performance, rather than proof of faster injury recovery.
Selected products also include CoolVent™, a more open knit in areas where extra ventilation is useful. In the Formfit Pro Knee, this sits behind the knee, where fabric can otherwise feel particularly warm when the joint bends.
Small details with a practical purpose
Across the Formfit Pro range, different supports use different combinations of features:
- SmartPad™: cushioning and targeted support.
- FoldLock™: fold lines and grip patterns designed to make fitting easier and help the support stay in position.
- RadialStrap™: additional compression and support on selected models.
The range includes supports for the knee, ankle, elbow, wrist and lower back. Each has its own design and intended use, so the features you need will depend on the area being supported.
Which Formfit knee support does what?
The knee range is a useful example of why choosing a support involves more than picking a size.
Formfit Pro Knee Flite is a lightweight compression sleeve intended for mild knee instability.
Formfit Pro Knee combines compression and support with a design intended to assist kneecap alignment.
Formfit Pro Knee OA is designed specifically for the early stages of knee osteoarthritis. It adds a Dynamic Force Strap system to the compression sleeve, with the aim of relieving pain.
Compression and unloading: what is the difference?
A compression sleeve fits closely around the joint, applying pressure through the fabric.
An unloading brace adds a mechanical system designed to reduce the load passing through an affected part of the knee. This is particularly relevant when osteoarthritis affects one side of the joint.
Össur’s dedicated Unloader braces use a combination of thigh and calf support with a strap system to create this effect. If you need more support than a sleeve provides, a clinician can help assess whether an unloading brace suits your knee.
Beyond the knee: support for other joints
The knee might get most of the attention, but the Formfit Pro range also includes options for the ankle, elbow, wrist and lower back. The same focus on breathable compression and a close, comfortable fit runs throughout, with different features for each area.
Formfit Pro Ankle
A lightweight compression support for mild ankle sprains, strains and instability. Its flexible design provides support around the ankle, with CoolVent™ fabric at the front for added breathability.
Formfit Pro Elbow
A compressive sleeve designed for elbow pain, including tennis elbow. It provides targeted support around an area that can become uncomfortable during gripping, lifting and repetitive tasks.
Formfit Pro Wrist
Designed for wrist pain associated with overuse, sprains and strains. It offers compression and support for a joint that works hard through everything from desk work to everyday lifting.
Formfit Pro Back
A compressive lower-back support with shaped aluminium stays and a removable lumbar pad for targeted cushioning. It provides more structured support and helps restrict movement in the lower back.
As with the knee range, choosing the right model starts with understanding the problem you are managing. Each support has a specific role, so it is worth checking the product’s intended use and sizing before choosing.
Choose support around your life
Start with what you want to feel more comfortable doing. Longer walks? A working day on your feet? Your rehabilitation exercises?
Then consider the problem you are managing, the type of support recommended and how easily you can put it on. A pull-on sleeve and a wraparound brace offer different fitting experiences.
Follow the sizing and fitting instructions for your chosen product. If you are unsure which model suits your symptoms, ask for advice before buying.
At Staying Active, we want to make those choices easier to understand, so you can find support that fits both your needs and your day.
